so for the past month or so at gamestop we’ve been getting prank calls from kids asking if we have big chungus. usually i play along and tell them it’s not out yet but you can preorder it for a thousand dollars or whatever because it makes them happy
anyway yesterday i walk into the back room at the beginning of my shift and see an empty game box with the big chungus box art inserted. like straight up just this exact image
except it was for the 360, not the ps4. inside was a copy of kinect adventures which i don’t think gamestop even sells anymore. i thought it was really funny and i asked my boss why he brought it in but he informed me that it had been there when he opened and had no idea where it came from (we still don’t know)
a couple hours later i had two kids come into the store and ask for big chungus in person. this was a first - previously i’d only received big chungus questions over the phone. it was a fucking miracle that this was happening on the same day a copy of big chungus had inexplicably materialized in the store. so i said “yes actually, one second” and stepped into the back, i could hear the kids gasping with disbelief behind me. i brought out big chungus and they absolutely lost their shit. one of them took a snap of it and was like “YO I’M AT GAMESTOP AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE BIG CHUNGUS” while the other frantically texted all his friends. it was great, best thing that’s happened at work in weeks. moral of the story is if you work at gamestop, print out a big chungus cover and keep it in the back, you may end up making some kid’s day
Two people posing as a young home buying couple (they are a young couple, that part isn’t in dispute) are sending mass letters to houses in entire neighborhoods talking about how much they love the house and want to buy it. For those who have sold, the couple have then flipped the properties, turning massive profits and displacing whole neighborhoods so that rich white newcomers can move in. Watch out for Rarebird!!!
The couple denies doing anything wrong.
What Literally what There isn’t anything wrong with that, people flip houses all the time and the people that are “displaced” chose to sell their houses and were compensated for it. There is nothing wrong with that.
HI YOU ARE MORALLY BANKRUPT AND DON’T UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT PF GENTRIFICATION BYE
No offense, but can you explain to me why this is a bad thing? I am not disagreeing, I just don’t understand. Thank you.
Ugh this is so hard.
Okay, in Portland you’re talking about a historically very racist city that’s segregated low income families and families of colour into certain specific areas–the Laurelhurst arches, for example, are the borders within which no black people could own houses or businesses. Research the Vanport Flood.
So in the early 2000s an influx of poor white queers started in the poor people of colour areas. We couldn’t afford better, and we wanted to be around other queers. The schools are underfunded, there are still shootings, long term residents couldn’t get home improvement loans or refinance their mortgages, and when white queers made the neighborhoods edgy instead of “the ghetto” white bridge and tunnel tourists wanted a piece of it and slowly began infiltrating. Literally pushing out businesses of colour like the Native American Youth Association couldn’t afford the new raised rent on their building and was forced out for a business called, literally, “hovel” which sold overpriced knickknacks to the new white residents moving into the new apartment buildings. At first the apartment buildings were built on vacant lots, which isn’t as bad as displacing actual residents, but it drives property taxes up while the banks still refused to refinance or offer home improvement loans to long term residents of colour and low income residents.
The businesses moving in to the neighbourhoods are to a one too expensive for low income residents to access, so when people talk about “urban renewal”, the renewal happening is happening for the specific newcomer population of rich white people. The locals aren’t able to access these new services like yoga studios, expensive hipster bars, expensive urban coops.
And then there’s the school factor: newcomers aren’t invested in local schools and overwhelmingly tend to send their children to charter schools out of the neighbourhood, so a strong advocating force for schools is thus denied to locals.
As the process continues, locals get priced out. They can’t afford their property taxes, rents get deliberately upped (this happened to me twice), people get evicted with no notice so that landlords can remodel or simply sell the lots for money.
In my old neighbourhood an old empty lot that locals had turned into a park was sold to become a giant overpriced apartment building.
The family across the street sold because they couldn’t afford the new taxes.
Three blocks away a landlord kicked out three generations of a family who’d been living in a house divided into three apartments to sell to a developer who made a four story luxury condo building.
The last black owned business in the area was forced out to become a giant leed certified business office.
A family owned ethiopian restaurant was deliberately driven closed because the new developer didn’t think the prospective white residents of his new buildings would “want to smell that kind of food.” But the piss smell of the local microbrewery is so aromatic, amirite?
A local laundromat was driven out of business when a hipster laundromat with wifi, coffee, and wine moved in four blocks away.
What people like Rarebird are doing is facilitating this process without giving back to the community.
Flipping is, definitionally, paying undermarket value for a product to remodel it and sell it for more.
They aren’t paying long term locals what their properties are worth, taking advantage of the high taxes white people have brought while underpaying to buy these places they then profit off of.
This is part of a larger problem where rich people buy multiple condos and apartments and then never live in them, preferring to Airbnb them occasionally for a profit.
There is no corresponding housing being build for the people who are displaced.
None of these buildings accept section 8 and mandatory inclusionary income zoning failed, which means there are no affordable apartments in any of these new buildings.
Rents have risen in Portland six times faster than anywhere else, while we remain largely a poor state, with only Nike, Adidas, and Intel drawing in new workers, and these workers are not the long term residents who’ve been forced out by the greed of the incoming whites for local flavour.
The only geographic locations with prices comparable to the old North and Northeast Portland are incredibly far out, areas without good public transit, and usually without sidewalks.
57% of our school children are on free lunch this summer because their parents CAN’T AFFORD TO FEED THEM.
Over 800 families are on ONE WAITLIST for shelter.
Our dv and homeless shelters for single people are full.
And Rarebird is buying people out, increasing rents, not giving back to the community in any way, and taking their profits and reinvesting them into repeating the process over and over and over again?
And people don’t see a problem with this?
This is the racism just under the surface that so many white people will never even think about.
this is a really good explanation of gentrification, please read it!!
This also explains in a great way the roll that white LGBT+ people play into gentrification, wheither they mean to or not. And if YOU are a white LGBT+ person that thinks you might be part of the problem and want to make sure your doing your part to fight gentrification I suggest looking up articles about “revitalization without gentrification” and go from there.
I just love how in English you say “great minds think alike”, which is a completely positive thing since you’re kinda praising yourself, but in German you go like “zwei Dumme, ein Gedanke” = “two fools, one thought”
German is beautiful, isn’t it
Kind of reminds me when my french teacher explained us the french idiom “L’espoir fait vivre” (Hope makes us live) and he asked me how Germans say it and I was like “Hope dies last” and his legit answer was:
“See, that’s why no one likes you!”
This will probably come as no surprise considering German fairytales, but our version of “And they lived happily ever after” is: “Und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind dann leben sie noch heute’’ = ”And if they didn’t die, then they still live today.”
if I may, I believe that the full saying is: great minds think alike, but simple minds never differ
Remember when tumblr turned off replies for like a whole year because they worked on a new system but apparently couldn’t let the old one stay meanwhile for some reason
Remember when tumblr was actively asking ppl to stop using the third party extension “missing e”(forefather to xkit) because apparently they didn’t wanna admit its the only way that’d make it bearable to even use tumblr.
Remember when tumblr purged users who uploaded audio posts of copyrighted music. Not removing the posts but the accounts would risk being deactivated if they had even one audio post.
Remember when tumblr made a “pinned post” feature so other blogs pinned posts was always at the top of your dashboard and you couldn’t remove it.
Remember how you could risk deleting your whole account when you just wanted to delete a sideblog
What is almost certainly happening with Tumblr’s image classifier is that they’ve deployed the bot entirely untrained, and are relying on user complaints to train it what NSFW content on tumblr looks like.
Making people participate in their own censorship in this way and punishing them with the threat of being silenced even if in compliance with the rules should they not participate, is, IMHO, abuse of their userbase.
Source: I’ve worked for three different top-five social networks, and at all of them this type of work would have been done by making the userbase do it as much as possible.
Please signal boost. I don’t care if you reblog or repost, just get the word out so that people know what they’re doing as they interect with this thing.
My twitter is @soren_tycho (nsfw, sfw account coming soon) and my github username is sorentycho.
Just chiming in as a machine learning expert, this is almost certainly the case (and knowing tumblr, they weren’t even smart enough to throw in pre-trained weights)
GOD THIS MAKES ME ANGRY. Is this just a big game of “Click all the squares with <strike>nipples</strike> cars in them? Is that it? You’re making us work for you on the way out you bastards? *normally sanguine Ces turns into giant rage machine* The (W#)*% *(* with this @$&!!!!
All of these posts link back to original posts of other blogs, I mostly made this for myself but decided to make it shareable, please respect the following:
If you click through to ANY of these posts, even if you don’t use them, reblog them individually if you’re going to like/reblog this post.
Okay, folks. So. Tumblr’s jumped the shark in a big way, and I’m not even just talking about indiscriminately blocking all “adult” content on a platform that IS, in fact, primarily 18+.
Many blogs, like the wonderful @blackkatmagic , that are not especially NSFW have vanished.
(And I for one LIKE being able to go to curated porn blogs run by actual people and have a chance of finding stuff to my taste, it was one of the things that kept me on this hellsite, but that’s another issue entirely.)
I know lots of people are talking about migrating, but none of us are sure to where yet. Pillowfort seems to be an option, some people are talking about Twitter. But for now, it’s a mess, and even if we knew where we were going, it’s often a huge process, and a lot of us have stuff on tumblr that ONLY exists there.
One possible quick solution to save your blogs, both NSFW and personal, is to import it to WordPress. I found this solution through from frantic googling on how to save an entire blog, text posts an all. There are several apps for downloading all the pictures from a tumblr, (Plently for Windows, but only a few paid ones for mac, of which Tumbelog Picture Downloader is working for me so far) but this is the only solution I’ve seen so far that allows you to save EVERYTHING. I downloaded my NSFW blog in like 10 min. My regular blog, which is significantly larger, is in the process of importing, but I don’t anticipate any problems. I will, of course, update you if I have any.
This tutorial I found worked really easily. http://quickguide (.) tumblr (.) com/post/39780378703/backing-up-your-tumblr-blog-to-wordpress
I put parenthesis around the .’s like we’re back in FF-Hell, just in case tumblr’s new thing about outgoing links kicks in. You know what to do.
To break it down, just in case:
Sign up for a WordPress.com account at wordpress (.) com/start
You’ll have to create an account, with your email, a username, and a password. They should send you a confirmation email immediately, check it, activate it, and you’re good to go.
On the site, it will ask you for a site name. That page asks you a bunch of other information too, but you only have to fill out the site name.
Then you have to give your site a URL. If you’re lucky, your tumblr URL is still available, if not you’ll have to come up with another one, sorry.
It will tell you if that option is still available for free.
Then it will ask you to pick a plan. Free is really good enough, I swear.
Now you’re set up! You can import your tumblr!
The only differences from the linked tutorial are that the Import button is now on the first level menu, not in tools.
Hit Import, then you have to follow the link for “other importers” at the bottom, to find the option for Tumblr.
Then you’ll have to sign in with tumblr, using your normal tumblr credentials. You’ll be redirected there automatically.
You’ll have to allow Wordpress permissions on your blog.
Then your blogs, including all your sideblogs, will show up in wordpress.
Hit import, wait a WHILE depending on the size of your blog, and you’re done!
ALSO!!
I made my NSFW blog private for now, since I don’t know WP’s policy on NSFW.
This means that to access it, someone has to have an account and request access. But hey, part of our problem on this hellsite has been people going places they aren’t wanted, so I don’t personally see this as a bad thing. They can send a request from the landing site on your blog, you get an email, click a link in the email, and PRESTO, they have access.
To make it private, go to Settings > Reading > Site Visibility. Go back and check, it took me changing the setting twice for it to actually stick.
tl;dr, you can import your entire blog to wordpress in just a few steps.
Edited almost immediately to add that Wordpress allows posting reblogging, commenting, AND following, and so it seems like honestly the most logical next place for fandom in my opinion. It also allows a high degree of customization.
I’m going to tag the hell out of this, in no particular order. PLEASE reblog this and spread the word so people know it’s an option. If you’re having trouble, PM me, and I’m happy to help.
There are a whole bunch more, but that’s a start. Please reblog the hell out of this, so people are aware of this one simple option.
EDIT: We’re not sure yet about wordpress’ stance on NSFW, so definitely mark those blogs private for now. I had one person tell me they got nuked for one NSFW post on a 7 year old blog. Definitely look into other solutions for backing up your blog just in case Private isn’t good enough. There seem to be lots of options for Windows, including Python. A quick google search will turn up several. I’m still looking for a good option for Mac. Anyone know any?
Update on Migrating to Wordpress
Back up your block somewhere else as well.
I’ve been forwarded the content guidelines for Wordpress, and while they do allow nudity, they do not allow visually explicit pornography, not even drawings.
From their site:
We do permit mature content on WordPress.com, including text, images and videos that contain nudity, offensive language, and mature subject material. However, blogs that contain such content must be marked as Mature in our system.
If you are publishing a blog that you expect will contain content that is intended for mature audiences, we ask that you provide us the courtesy of reporting your blog or website here.
A blog or website that is marked as Mature is excluded from public areas of the WordPress.com service. This means:
• It will not appear in the Reader or other tag listings
• It will not appear in Top Blogs listings, recent posts, or related posts listings on other blogs
• The blog’s users cannot use that URL as a link in their WordPress.com Forums profile
Mature blogs and their owners are permitted to utilize all other aspects of WordPress.com. We do not suspend blogs solely for the presence of mature content and there are no interstitials or other “age gates” on WordPress.com.
However, there are limitations to the mature content permitted on our service. Please don’t:
• Post visual depictions of sexually explicit acts (such as, but not limited to, images, videos, and drawings) that can be considered pornographic;
• Post links or ads to adult-oriented affiliate networks, such as pornography site signups;
• Post links, text, or images promoting or advertising escort or erotic services;
• Post images of extreme violence or gore without associated context or commentary;
• Post images of child pornography;
• Post content that promotes pedophilia, such as blogs with galleries of images of children where the images, content surrounding the images, or the intent of the blog is sexually suggestive.
Blogs found to be hosting the above material will be suspended. In cases of child pornography, we will report all incidences to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and fully cooperate with law enforcement.
What does this mean?
I would hope that completely private blogs would not be flagged, but make sure that you back up your blog elsewhere, if it has any NSFW.
This seems not to include NSFW text, so fic should still be okay, but AO3 is really probably best for this.
Wordpress is still an option for fic and fanart, but is probably not the best option for porn. (Even the excellently curated blogs that can be found on Tumblr. Am I bitter? Yes.)
Other options:
I’ve been seeing a lot of support for Dreamwidth. Though I don’t use it myself, it’s definitely a good option. Pillowfort is still inder construction and doesn’t seem to have a long term finance plan, but it’s probably worth getting an account and trying it out.
I haven’t found a good one for Mac yet, but I’m on the hunt.
Tumblr has a native export option, but I haven’t gotten it to work for me yet? Which doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work.
Mentioned problems:
Guys. This post has gotten over 14k notes in 4 hours. I’ve seen very few of the comments.
But some of them mentioned that they weren’t seeing the free option? I don’t know, guys, I still see it. Maybe it’s a country issue? Dreamwidth is absolutely free, if nothing else.
Not importing:
Again. 14k notes. I’m sure their servers are heavily overloaded. Be patient. Set up your computer somewhere plugged in and come back tomorrow. Mine is 4 hours into 8k posts and less than a ¼th of the way through. It’s gonna take a while.
There is also a petition up to change Tumblr’s mind on this situation.
Who knows if it would work, but it’s worth signing.
Does tumblr have a porn bot and actually illegal child porn problem? Yes.
Is the solution to that the nuke the blogs of a bunch of consenting adults? No.
Hopefully this is all a passing storm that will result in them getting their act together.
Am I hopeful? No. But it’s worth signing.
The Take away:
Wordpress is a possible solution for text-based fandom, but it’s not the new tumblr.
DON’T PANIC, at the risk of plagiarizing Douglas Adams. Backup, protect your stuff, let people know where to find you, but don’t panic.
I’m personally gonna continue to use this site until it implodes, which it might not even do. It’s my main social media platform, and I do have some hope that they might pull their heads out of their asses.
Good luck everyone.
I’m tagging the hell out of this again, and I would really appreciate it if everyone could reblog this just as far as the previous one. I’ve tagged as many people as tumblr will let me XD
lads i was really just going about my life today and i came into my genetics lecture and my professor put both hands on the podium and explained to our suddenly silent 200+ person lecture hall that a chinese scientist has just created the world’s first GMO babies by taking human embryos and modifying them to be resistant to HIV. there are two of them and they’re twins. apparently we don’t know yet if it’s successful but it was at a conference where a ton of GMO researchers were discussing if genetic modification of humans should be allowed and if so to what extent and apparently this dude got the microphone and said ‘ive already done it’ and showed some data (apparently not a lot though) and there’s a ton of drama happening right now because ‘what the FUCK do you MEAN you already did it????? what the FUCK dude?????’. my professor kept saying to us with complete sincerity ‘this is important, this is really, really important’ and anyway i just…….what a time to be alive, you know?
like i dont feel comfortable taking a stance on any of this without more information but i do know for certain that god, i wish i could have witnessed that room of GMO researchers when this dude got the mic and was really like ‘i have modified human embryos’
Hey! I’m a scientist who works with gene editing and can def give you more context on the gmo babies! tldr it’s unethical and Not Great, but basically there’s been an (unenforceable) international moratorium on gene editing humans since 2015. It’s maybe illegal, maybe just advised against in China. The university, hospital, and government are all denying knowledge of it tho, which makes this super shady. (1/?)
Here’s the thing: gene editing has been used in therapy in humans, but 1. patients give full consent and 2. cells are removed from the body, CHECKED, double-checked, then put back in, because gene editing can have off-target effects and we want to avoid those, and 3. only cells that can’t be inherited are edited, so that an individual is only giving consent to alter their own body, not their children and/or the general gene population. NONE OF THOSE THREE HAPPENED IN THIS CASE. (2/?)
It’s extremely unclear if the parents knew what was happening, other than that the dad was HIV+ and the research was supposed to prevent the kids from getting HIV. (There are a LOT of cheaper and more accessible ways to do this than gene editing). So far, the scientist hasn’t proven that he checked for (or prevented) off target effects - but we do know one of the kids is a mosaic, meaning only SOME of her cells were altered. This could be really bad for her health, we literally don’t know (3/?)
This guy waited until he had produced human beings to make his announcement, didn’t consult the public, other scientists, or regulatory boards, and sprung the announcement RIGHT before the human gene editing conference - which signals that he did this for his own sake, not for science. He’s set a dangerous precedent and potentially damaged the public perception of gene editing, not to mention endangering those children (the edit made them more susceptible to West Nile). So. Fuck that guy. (4/4)
……👀
this is…quite literally the wildest shit like i understand the incredible temptation to try something just to see if it could be done, every scientist understands that, but holy shit dude what the fuck?
idk this has a LOT happening and im not gonna be able to address all of it but my thoughts right off the bat: current gene editing (see: modifying someone’s existing genome. different from this case because in gene editing, the person is born and is displaying symptoms of a genetic disease, where here the embryos are being modified before birth) is pretty life changing and very safe and effective from my understanding of it and what i’ve been taught, and it makes me angrier knowing that this might set back that kind of science that’s more ethical in terms of consent. i also don’t like that the lives of these kids are gonna be inherently controversial. i also don’t like……………uh…..almost all of this, actually. like this is A Lot, holy shit.
Finding out that Frances Dana Barker Gage, a white woman, rewrote Sojourner Truth’s famous speech to be more stereotypically “Southern slave” (complete with slurs and misspellings like dat, dere, dey) when Sojourner Truth was actually from New York and spoke only Dutch until she was almost ten and wouldn’t have actually sounded that way linguistically and decidedly did not use the phrase “Ain’t I A Woman?” at all is…whew. And on top of everything, she embellished details about Sojourner Truth’s life (like the number of children she had/how many of them were sold into slavery), wrote that ST said that she could take beatings like a man, and the reception of the speech in the room (she claims ST was called a n*gg*r, earlier accounts say the room was welcoming).
Lmaooo peak white feminist antics.
You can read the most accurate transcript here, alongside the racist edited one.
I was already disgusted just reading about this but looking at the side-by-side comparison of the real speech and the rewrite really brought it home.
